8 Best DIY Desk Ideas for Home
1. The Floating Desk
This is the simplest and easiest desk anyone can do it on their own. I prefer this one for a complete beginner. Even, though this is your first DIY project, you can go ahead without any hesitation…
As the name indicates, this desk floats in the air… Don’t believe me? Yes, it floats… It doesn’t have supporting legs like traditional desks. The wooden base is supported by L-shaped iron rods, that are mounted to the wall.
For those who need a space-saving DIY desk at an affordable cost, this model is the best. You just need to buy the wooden base and rods.
Then with a driller and some screws, you can easily fix the table. That’s all it’s done… You have made your DIY home desk within a few minutes…
For an even more affordable option, you can use any old wooden base that’s available in your home or backyard.
NOTE: The only thing you must take care of is the desk height. Measure your chair height, before drilling holes on walls. If you commit a mistake in height, then you must redo the work.
For an even easier process, refer to Tasha’s blog about the step-by-step tutorial about this floating desk by Kaleidoscope Living.
One thing you must consider about the design of this desk. It’s fixed and not portable (you can’t move this desk).

How to Make this Desk?
- Gather Materials and Tools: 2’x4’ plywood, 1×2 pine boards, wood stain, wood conditioner, topcoat, wood glue, miter saw, nail gun, sander, drill, screws, clamps.
- Create rectangular legs using 1×2 pine boards. Secure with wood glue and nails, or use a Kreg jig for pocket holes.
- Attach legs to the plywood desktop, then frame out the edges with 1×2 pine boards for a polished look.
- Apply wood conditioner and topcoat to complete the desk.
